The International Centre for Islam and Pluralism (ICIP) was established in Jakarta in July 2003, after one year of preparation and dialogue. Participants in the dialogue process included intellectuals and specialists on Islam and pluralism, from Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Thailand and the Philippines.
The principal goal of ICIP is to build a network of Islamic Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and progressive-moderate Muslim activists and intellectuals, in South-East Asia, and eventually around the globe. ICIP's soft launching took place on 11-11-2003 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
ICIP Launches program on Open, Distance and e-Learning
On April 7-8, 2008, the program on Open, Distance and e-Learning for Islamic Transformation through Pesantren was officially launched by the International Center for Islam and Pluralism in cooperation with the Ford Foundation Jakarta. Those who took part in this launching included representatives from ICIP, the Ford Foundation, pesantren who are participating in the pilot project, foreign dignitaries, members of related NGOs and the press and featured keynote speeches by the Minister for Information and Communications Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nuh and the Minister for National Education Prof. Dr. Bambang Sudibyo.

New ICIP E-Journal
ICIP has published its first edition of the Al-Wasathiyyah English Online magazine in the E-Journal section. From now on the E-Journal section will feature translated versions of ICIP's Al-Wasathiyyah magazine which has been published in Indonesian and distributed to pesantren throughout West Java since 2006. The online version will feature articles from the original Al-Wasathiyyah editions, as well as up to date profiles and activities from ICIP.

IT Training for Pesantren
From November 12 - 24, 2007, participants in the International Center for Islam and Pluralism's program on e-learning for Islamic Transformation in Pesantren took part in a training program on IT usage hosted by the University of Indonesia at their Depok campus. In this program prospective Community Organisers for ICIP's e-learning program were taken through topics on the basics of networks, internet, applications, website development and the Learning Management System. This training was aimed at preparing participants for the nation-wide launching of the e-learning program in early, 2008.
