Abdul Kadir Riyadi conveys his alarm at the establishment of a polygamy club in Bandung and members’ testimonies of the benefits of the practice as aired on television. He argues that the fulfilment enjoyed through a husband’s fidelity to a single wife is impossible with two or more wives, and draws on the Koran to critique polygamous Muslims. For example, while Islam permits additional marriages subject to the husband treating each wife ‘fairly and equitably’, the Koran implies that no man can be fair to multiple wives and as such does not condone the practice.
