Bachtiar Effendy argues that there is an urgent need for both government and parliament to reassess the authority given to Aceh to administer itself by sharia. Drawing on historical factors as well as recent first-hand observations, he suggests that Acehnese themselves are more interested in the socio-cultural, economic and political development of Aceh than ‘turning their region into a laboratory for the implementation of sharia’.
