"Renewing our spirit of tolerance, pluralism" Print
Jakarta Post, Bristol, Mon 4 Jan 2010, Opinion

Following the recent destruction of a new church in West Java, Gabriel Faimau scrutinises Indonesia's international reputation as a model of cultural and religious tolerance. He problematizes politicized views which espouse that any one faith is so important as to require all people to follow it. More appropriate in a multicultural society, he continues, is the proposition that 'faith is so important that everyone should respectfully be allowed to live according to a faith that is true to him/her' (Sacks, 2002).
