He provides a biographical sketch of Gus Dur, and emphasizes that he will be remembered most as an extraordinary man 'who dedicated himself to tolerance, pluralism, democracy and respect for human rights'. While often misunderstood as a proponent of secularism by those who had not read him carefully, Gus Dur was in reality dedicated to the indigenization of Islam, such that in Indonesia 'there is no need to put Islam culturally in the context of its origin, Saudi Arabia'.
