“Mosques ‘infected by radicalism” Print
Jakarta Post, Jakarta, Fri 8 Jan 2010, National

Hans David Tampubolon reports on the results of a Centre for the Study of Religion and Culture (CSRC) survey presented by Irfan Abubakar at a recent seminar. The study, based on some 100 respondents from 10 mosques of various affiliations in Surakarta, concluded that radicalism may be occurring at mosques affiliated with moderate groups or located in heterogeneous communities, and that rejection of democracy and pluralism is widespread. In the ensuing discussion, Sidney Jones reportedly praised the data, but added that the next study should also include clerics’ teachings, more detailed background data on mosque officials and their affiliations, and the ulamas the clerics refer to for their teachings.
