1. International Workshop "Women's Rights Advocacy, Islam and the Public Sphere"
On February 12-17, 2007 ICIP in cooperation with the
International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World held an international workshop on “Women's Rights
Advocacy, Islam and the Public Sphere: Comparative Perspectives By Iranian and Indonesian Activists” in Cipasung,
West Java. This workshop brought together women from
Iran and Indonesia to share their experiences, strategies and concerns
in their common endeavor to campaign for women’s rights
within an Islamic framework. The participants continued to maintain communication through a shared web portal in the hopes that there can be further cooperation between Indonesian and Iranian activists in the future.
2. International Seminar on Stereotypes in Europe and the Islamic World (November 2006)
On November 22-23 2006, ICIP in cooperation with the Finnish
Embassy held an International
Seminar on "Challenging Stereotypes in Europe and the Islamic World:
Working Together for Constructive Policies and Partnership". This
seminar invited speakers from Indonesia,
Finland and Europe to discuss how stereotypes of Islam in Europe and of
Europe in the Islamic world can be overcome. See the December 2006 edition of ICIP's E-Journal for presentations and papers which featured at the seminar.
3. Second Roundtable Meeting (December 7, 2005)
ICIP completed the roundtable meeting on Islam and democracy among
experts and policy makers in Southeast Asia on 7 December 2005. It was
the second rountable after the first roundtable organized by the PCID
(the Philippines Council for Islam and Democracy). The topic for the
three days roundtable was Democracy and Democratization: Challenges and
Prospects in Southeast Asia. This roundtable addressed the factors
influencing both the growth of and limitations to democracy in states
in the Southeast Asia, through analyzing the social, cultural, and
political and other relevant factors, as well as looking at the
challenges of fundamentalism and conservatism. Some recommendations
were made during the roundtable which are expected to have some
contributions to policy makers, academics and those who interested in
democracy in this region. The program seemed also to act as a medium
for networking for policy makers and academics interested in these
issues.
4. International Conference on Islam, Authoritarianism and Democracy (December 6-7, 2004)
ICIP's organized an
international seminar titled "the Future of Islam, Democracy, and
Authoritarianism in The Muslim World." Among those speaking at this
seminar were Abdurrahman Wahid (Indonesian's Former President),
Azyumardi Azra (Rector Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic State University
Jakarta), Khaled Abou El Fadl (Professor of Law UCLA Law Faculty, USA),
Muhammad Khalid Masud (Chairman, Council of Islamic Ideology,
Government of Pakistan), Amien Abdullah (Rector Sunan Kalijaga State
Islamic University Yogyakarta), Amien Saikal (ANU, Australia), Kishore
Mahbubani (NUS Singapore), Datu Michael O. Mastura (Sultan Kudarat
Islamic Academy Foundation College, the Philippines), Patricia Martinez
(under confirmation), M. Amien Rais (Former Speaker of People
Representative Council and Professor at Gadjah Mada University) and
Judith Nagata (Department of Anthropology, York University, Toronto,
Canada), and Ebrahim Moosa (Duke University, USA). The conference took
place on 6-7 December 2004.
5. Regional Workshop on Education on Pluralism and Multiculturalism (November 25-27, 2004)This
workshop forms part of the program `Strengthening the understanding and
attitudes towards pluralism and multiculturalism among young
journalists and young religious leaders', and was conducted in
cooperation with the European Commission, on 25-27 November 2004. Among
the invited speakers were Dr. Shamsul AB (National University of
Malaysia), Shanon Sah (Malaysia), and Marina Mahathir (Malaysia); Dr.
Suzaina Kadir (NUS Singapore), Dr. Leonard Sebastian (IDSS Nanyang
University Singapore), and H. Maaruf (ISEAS Singapore); Dr. Ta Min Tuan
and Mr. Doan Van Thang (Institute of International Affairs, Vietnam);
Dr. Imtiaz Yusuf (England-Thailand); Dr. Carmen Abubakar (University of
the Philippines), Dr. Bagian A. Abdulkarim and Ms. Yasmin Lao (the
Philippines); Dr. Ahmed F. Youssif and Muhammad Hussein Ahmad
(University of Brunei Darussalam). Indonesian participants included dr.
Tarmizi Taher (Indonesian Former Religious Minister), Mr. Endi Bayuni
(Jakarta Post) and Noor Huda Ismail (Washington Post). From this
workshop ICIP was able to produce a training module for young
journalist and religious leaders.
6. ICIP in cooperation with French and Switzerland Embassy (March 18-20, 2004)
organized
an International Conference on `Islam and Universal Values: Islam's
Contribution to the Construction of a Pluralistic World', on 18 March
2004' at Hotel Nico Jakarta. This was followed by a series of
discussion with Noble Peace Winner Ms. Shirin Ebadi on 19-20 March 2004.
